CHAPTER THIRTEEN

A BUDDHIST CONCEPTION OF THE THREE STEPS ON THE SPIRITUAL LADDER

APHORISM #1: The Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism refers to the first step of the spiritual ladder as "Training in Moral Discipline."

APHORISM #2: They call the second step "Training in Concentration."

APHORISM #3: They call the third step "Training in Wisdom."

APHORISM #4: They agree that one begins with virtue, continues with concentration and concludes with wisdom.

APHORISM #5: This school uses the word turnings for steps and suggests that the first turning possesses fundamental teachings followed by all schools. The second turning possesses more profound teachings and the third turning possesses very subtle teachings.
