11-20-98 CHAPTER FIFTEEN: THE TEN KEY QUESTIONS

Lord Buddha chose not to answer ten key questions about life:

  1. Is the world eternal?
  2. Is it non-eternal?
  3. Is it finite?
  4. Is it infinite?
  5. Is the soul the same as the body?
  6. Is it different from the body?
  7. Does one who has known the truth live again after death?
  8. Does he not live again after death?
  9. Does he both live again and not live again after death?
  10. Does he neither live nor not live again after death?
  11. I would add the further question:

  12. What is the purpose of life or why did God create the world?

The reason these questions should not become a prime focus in the spiritual life is because they take us out of the Big Mind and bring us back into the small mind. No answer to these questions can be helpful in pointing to Ultimate Truth, because the answer is part of conventional knowledge. For example, suppose you ask, What is the cause of diversity? Then any answer I give will be a cause of an effect (diversity) and that cause-effect relationship will, itself, represent diversity! You are engaging in a vicious cycle of ignorance!

A purpose implies a knower seeking some known effect. Thus, one is already in duality when talking about purpose and how can duality represent anything Ultimate? Do you follow me?

All of questions Buddha refused to answer can be analyzed in a similar way.
