CHAPTER FOUR: THE THREE STEPS ON THE SPIRITUAL LADDER

APHORISM #1: The first step on the spiritual ladder for every seeker is called the Path of Religion. It is where we learn moral and ethical principles for guiding our life.

COMMENTARY: This step remains important throughout the spiritual quest. Some people wrongly believe that once they have started meditation (step two of the spiritual ladder), they no longer have to be concerned with issues of morality. This is self-delusion at its worst.

APHORISM #2: The second step on the spiritual ladder is the Path of Yoga or Meditative Concentration. There are eight archetypal paths to God, or styles of meditation and spiritual practice. Fortunate is the person who knows his own path with certitude.

COMMENTARY: The greatest contribution of The Art of Multi-Dimensional Living® is its ability to identify each individual’s predominant strength of personality and how this strength translates into a spiritual path or Yoga.

APHORISM #3: The third step on the spiritual ladder is the Path of Wisdom. It is at this level that one focuses primarily on who or what one really is: Pure Consciousness. At this stage of development conventional knowledge begins to be replaced by Ultimate knowledge and experience.

COMMENTARY: Steps one and two of the spiritual ladder are a prerequisite to step three. However, at a certain point they can also become obstacles to Ultimate knowledge. One is in danger of becoming attached to one’s status as a meditator and feeding the ego in the name of getting rid of it. At this stage it is important not to constantly practice being a lion, but to wake up and roar! Remember that the ego will postpone its own demise forever. It loves to stay on a path towards some goal, to keep busy, to strive and strain for some ideal and to count its accomplishments. All such efforts ensure the continuation of the egoic "I."

APHORISM #4: At a certain point, Grace descends on the seeker and then (s)he realizes that there are no steps on the ladder nor is there a seeker climbing them. There is only God or Brahman and (s)he is One with That.
